Diabetic Diet
The current advice for anyone following a diabetic diet is to base it on the same principles of healthy eating that apply to everyone, whether they suffer from diabetes or not. The difference for people with diabetes is that they need to monitor their blood sugar levels much more carefully.
As our diet plan review explains, until recently there was a special Diabetic diet, but more recent medical research suggests that the previously prescribed Diabetic diet put undue focus on carbohydrates.
Controlling blood sugar levels controls diabetes. Until recently, diet meal plans for people with diabetes revolved around the amount and timing of carbohydrate intake. Every carbohydrate was allocated a value per portion, known as the 'exchange'. Diet meal plans were calculated by the number of 'exchanges' each carbohydrate food contained. A slice of wholemeal bread contains 10g of carbohydrate. This counts as one 'exchange'. So if your daily allowance is 200g of carbohydrate, that means 20 exchanges per day.
However, this exchange system is no longer followed, because carbohydrate is not the only food type that the body breaks down into glucose. Everything you eat has some energy value, and protein and fat are also partly converted to glucose, so any system of calculation needs to take everything you eat into consideration, not just carbohydrate.
It is particularly important for people with diabetes to avoid becoming overweight, because they don't have the ability to counterbalance overeating by producing extra insulin to manage their blood sugar level. Here is a recipe for healthy eating with diabetes:
* Eat regular meals
* Eat little or no high-sugar foods
* Eat less fat
* Eat less salt
* Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables per day
* Drink alcohol only in moderation

Re: Diabetic Diet
The diabetic diet should consist of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Half of the calories should come from complex carbohydrates. This comprises, whole grain breads, cereals, fruit, vegetables and low fat milk. As most of the glucose in the bloodstream comes the breaking down of carbohydrates, the way the food is prepared, the amount of fiber it contains determines the amount of glucose released into the blood stream. Although rice and rotis both contain carbohydrates, what is important is that rotis digest more slowly and blood sugar levels rise slowly, whereas they rise faster after rice is eaten. So what is important here is the glycemic index of food. Foods with a lower glycemic index raise sugar levels gradually, while high glycemic index foods raise blood sugar levels very fast.

Re: Diabetic Diet
Thanks for the tips PmX. It's good to know that diabetics can have their diets the same as those who are planning to lose weight. This way, they'd feel like normal healthy persons.

Re: Diabetic Diet
1800 calories is what is advised for a diabetic in a day
But that is pretty much less if your age group is 30-45 because of the current day stress levels you need to eat more to keep up the strength, so what is the cure?
Have a regular exercise regimen of one hour which can cut down your calories by around 600+ calories, so which means you can have that much more in your meals...a little more

Re: Diabetic Diet
Whatever the calories you intake, divide it regularly, so that your stomach is not empty on any point of time. It is adviceable to have food 6 times a day.

Re: Diabetic Diet
As a diabetic, it's important to watch your diet. It usually takes a few weeks to learn what to eat and when to eat, but once you discover the right diet, it's important to stick to it.
